You. Me. We. World Blog Action Day Dreaming – by Emma Stirling APD

Today is a very powerful day. To me. And you. But you don’t even know it yet. Do you? You see whenever we meet to learn, discuss, share, debate and dream. You. Me. Become We. And today is one of those rare chances to use that power to shape our world. Are you ready?

World Blog Action Day, October 16 2013 – Human Rights

But why mummy? Miss 11 whispered in my ear in the darkened auditorium. Why do the boys in the film get to go to school and not the girls? Why don’t they have enough food? And why did they not get enough help after the earthquake? Deciding to take my wise, but wide eyed daughter, to the World Vision premiere of Girl Rising was not an easy task. As a World Vision Blogger Ambassador was she my best choice as a plus one? But 5min into the film I knew I’d made the right decision.

Why is it that the basic human rights we take for granted are not universal? Why do I even need to dream of a world without hunger and food security for all? How do I even start to explain the horrific things that happen to children, many much younger than my precious two? And that not every girl that rises up has a happy ending?

Girl rising azmera - this life is mine to make

But there is hope. And reason to celebrate with girls like Azmeera. This stunningly beautiful film, in pictures and message, eloquently tells the tales of powerful girls around the globe. True stories of courage and the big difference the basic human right of education makes.

Girl Rising Wadley - impossible things seem possible

It showcases girls like Wadley above, hungry for learning like my Miss 11.  And hints to bigger dreams like even winning a Nobel Peace Prize by standing up for education.

Girl Rising Mariama - there is nothing to stop me

But overall it reminds us all of the need to be helpful. To be a resource. A teacher. An educator. And take the time to give back.  With 33 million fewer girls than boys in primary school and 66 million girls out of school globally, now is the time for action.

How are you spending your time online today?  Miss 11 has put aside #OOTD (that’s fashion posts with “outfit of the day”) and is proudly telling tales about girls rising around the world. And I’m quietly smiling, not dreaming, for today at least.

What can you do?
